Luton Arches Refurb

Status: Completed 2021

Partners: Network Rail, Dyer & Butler & Lionel Stanhope

Project Costs: £650,000+

Luton Arches, one of Chatham’s most iconic historic structures, underwent a major refurbishment in 2021, restoring its visual and structural integrity for future generations. Although Arches Local did not fund the works, we played a crucial role in lobbying for the refurbishment, facilitating countless meetings, and making the case for investment in this landmark.

As an organisation named after the Luton Arches viaduct, we have always recognised its significance. For years, we actively engaged with stakeholders, pushing for the much-needed restoration and improvements. We firmly believe that without our sustained efforts and commitment to the area’s regeneration, this refurbishment would not have taken place.

The £650,000+ project was delivered by Network Rail, in partnership with Dyer & Butler. Over three months, the arches were cleaned, repaired, and revitalised, bringing new vibrancy to this historic gateway to Luton and wider Chatham. To put the cherry on the cake, we worked with Lionel Stanhope to install our first mural featuring the historic Driver Fountain, which we returned to the area a number of years later.
