The parking is for the shops on luton road there is very limited parking for luton road residents who park there plus the drs patients and school staff who park there that car park is never empty day or night the surrounding roads are always stacked with cars you want to start a new business that would require more cars to park in the area! Where?
Hi Kelly,
As local residents, we are also aware of the many users of the car park, to add a few more people park there and walk to the train station, some leave multiple cars for weeks/months on end unmoved. It is also a high crime spot with a range of crime from violent, drug dealing to largest being anti-social behaviour. It is car park managed/owned by Medway Council and is currently free to park there it is also under threat of development with discussions around building housing on it with the possibility of reduced or little parking. The local economy is poor with many empty shops and proliferation of convenience stores and takeaways we would like to see that economy improve with more employment opportunities paying local people a decent wage and working in nice environment, we feel the market could contribute to this and help keep the car park as it is for the majority of the time available for local people to park in. Many talks negatively about that area though we accept that a market may not be the answer alone or at all to changing the environment doing nothing and leaving it as it is we feel is not the answer.
The concept of a market there has created lots of discussions. In answer to where would people park if there were more businesses, which would mean more local jobs and more money for local people, and opportunity to shop locally especially for the elderly. If the car park was properly managed I am sure we would find that there would be many more parking spaces available for those living and in and around that area as many abused the fact it is free and if we found this was not the case it would lead to other discussions and we hope positive change making where we live even better.
I hope this goes someway to answer your questions and we thank you for taking the time to comment.
